BRENDAN RODGERS has expressed his delight at the progress being made at the Academy ahead of Liverpool FC’s FA Youth Cup semi-final first leg against Chelsea at Anfield tonight.
The first team boss will be watching the last four showdown with interest as the Reds look to take a step closer to lifting the trophy for the first time since 2007.
“This season the youngsters have done very well,” Rodgers said.
“It shows what we’re trying to do here as a club to push everything forward. The Youth Cup is a benchmark for that.
“I think for young lads it’s all about experience. It’s about finding a way to force your way through into the first team and these games are great for them.
“The Youth Cup games are the only ones I’ll look for at youth level in terms of results.
“I’m not really worried where we finish in terms of the leagues because it’s about developing players. There is no point winning under-21 or under-18 titles but having no players coming through.
“The Youth Cup represents a chance for the young players to come together and get a sense of what it’s like to prepare for something that matters.
“It will be a tough tie against Chelsea as I know a lot of their young players but hopefully we can keep this run going.”
